Who Works From Home?

Are you tired of torturous commutes and countless interruptions? For thousands of people just like you, a work at home career is their road to freedom and happiness. About 14 million people run home based businesses or freelance, although the exact number is difficult to pinpoint. The IRS, Bureau of Labor Statistics and a number of private researchers all collect data about people who work from home. Some researchers count small businesses. Some fail to distinguish between paid and unpaid work.

While it is true that figures lie and liars figure, statistics do offer a useful insight into the nature of home workers. Four out of five home workers are married or cohabitating. Forty percent have a household income over $75,000 a year.

Millions have made the road less traveled their way to work. Since you’re reading this blog, you’re probably one of the people who, when asked if they’d like to work from home, answers “Would I ever!” Others who answer that question the same way probably want to work from home for the same reason you do: to create a better balance between work and life.

Would you like to add six productive years to your life without giving up red meat or working up a sweat? The average U.S. worker wastes almost four years of their life on the trek to and from their job. The most obvious benefit of working from home is increased flexibility. Have to meet the refrigerator repairman between the convenient hours of 8 AM and 4 PM? Want to make sure your mom takes her medicine? Work better late at night?

Research shows that successful home workers are more productive than their office counterparts. In fact, about 40 percent of home workers surveyed report being more productive at home. You probably won’t make more money as a home worker. But a typical home worker can save between $7,000 and $17,000 a year.

No one should attempt working from home until they understand how to be a competent home worker. When you think about working from home, do you picture yourself at your kitchen table in comfy clothes with a steaming cup of tea at hand? Sounds good, but beyond that romantic vision of your new, at home working self, what really are your motivations? Does what you want to achieve match what you can achieve?

The reasons people work from home are as diverse as the people themselves.

1. Proximity to young children and other home based duties

2. Distraction from a life crisis like a divorce or the death of a parent

3. A sense that you’re falling behind others who have a job and a connection to the outside world

4. A desire to help other people

5. The need for additional cash for needs (diapers, tuition, etc.) or wants (vacation, clothing, etc.)

6. Escaping from a long commute or annoying coworkers

7. A desire to remain productive and intellectually stimulated

8. A desire to achieve more control over your life

9. The need to save money on office space for an already thriving business
